  2. bishop. According to legend he was the son of
  3. a prince of Dyfed and uncle of King Arthur;
  4. he was responsible for the adoption of the
  5. leek as the national emblem of Wales, but his
  6. own emblem is a dove. Feast day 1 Mar.
  7. Tradition has it that David made a pilgrimage
  8. to Jerusalem, where he was consecrated
  9. bishop. He founded 12 monasteries in Wales,
  10. including one at Menevia (now St Davids),
  11. which he made his bishop's seat; he presided
  12. over a synod at Brefi and condemned the ideas
  13. of the British theologian Pelagius.
